The Tasty Liquid Alliance needs your support.

The owners of local breweries Dorchester Brewing Co. and Aeronaut Brewing Co. recently devised a new strategy for navigating the chilled craft beer space—joining forces in a merger.

The brewers have finalized a merger agreement that designates Dorchester Brewing's CEO, Matt Malloy, as the leader of the consolidated entity. Malloy envisions incorporating up to three additional regional brewers into the alliance, which will operate under the moniker "Tasty Liquid Alliance." Apparently, George Lucas was consulted during the rebranding process.

This past Thursday, employees at both Dorchester Brewing and Aeronaut were notified of the plan to merge. Aeronaut, established in 2014, will continue to operate its taproom in Somerville but will shutter its production facility in Everett early 2024 and shift its brewing operations to Dorchester Brewing's facility in the Newmarket district.

Co-CEOs of Aeronaut, Dan Rassi and Ronn Friedlander, will retain their positions within the merged company, along with the majority of Aeronaut's 50 employees. The fate of Aeronaut's nine production workers in Everett remains uncertain, as not all of them will be offered positions in Dorchester. Dorchester Brewing currently employs around 40 people.

A primary objective of the merger, according to Friedlander, is to combine purchasing and marketing strength and resources. While both Aeronaut and Dorchester brands will persist, the merger is anticipated to enhance bargaining power in negotiations concerning equipment, ingredients, and restaurant taps.

Malloy is open to not only brewers but also those licensed to produce cider and wine. He underscores the importance of finding like-minded individuals with a passion for quality products and community, distinguishing their approach from a private equity rollup focused solely on uniformity at the expense of individuality and community preferences.

This effort to consolidate comes in the midst of a national stagnation in craft beer sales, following a period of robust growth that spanned over a decade before the absolute smackdown hard seltzers put on the ready-to-drink alcoholic bevy market.

The hard seltzer market has been on a tear.

Dorchester Brewing, which started as a contract brewer in 2016, primarily focuses on brewing beer for other companies, with in-house beers accounting for less than 10 percent of its volume. Aeronaut, too, engaged in some wholesale business. Malloy anticipates that the merger will enhance the combined companies' wholesale activities by fostering efficiency and knowledge sharing.

Snowport is losing the locker room.

Other than a few slanderous complaints about the line outside of Snowport (which we wholeheartedly agree with but for legal reasons will not distribute), this picture of a Tatte Turkey BLAT (bacon lettuce avocado tomato, for the uninitiated) is all we received this weekend. So…enjoy…

Beautiful turkey BLAT submitted by TSJ reader Emily D.
